Jeker’s Cardboard Condo

Jeker’s Cardboard Condo – Self Titled
Posted by RingMaster on September 16, 2013

More than just a band name and album title, Jeker’s Cardboard Condo is an album which steps forward from within classic rock familiarity and assuming expectations to present one extremely captivating and enjoyable encounter. It is not going to rival others for best of lists come December but for honest and instinctive rock ‘n’ roll with an infectious voice and magnetic heart it stands side by side with most.
The story behind the name and release is the type of tale music and blues rock was created to soundtrack. The protagonist of the tale is Mark Jeker, a guitarist/vocalist/songwriter who decided to devote everything to his music amidst disillusion with life. The man in his bio states, “I left everything behind, my home, my family, myself respect and sometimes, my dignity.” Living in his pickup truck and playing with his cover band to raise any kind of funds, Jeker wrote and worked on his music, moving from parking lots to fields and gas stations in the truck as he continued to write and play guitar. The demise of his home/vehicle saw him travelling to NYC looking for inspiration in the streets and the people he met and money earned from street performing just about paying for his trips. As bar gigs in Jersey slowed in the summer he began sleeping on the streets and river banks with guitar and writing pad, with time also spent in subways and in line at soup kitchens. One rainy day in July 2010 he built his own cardboard shelter with refrigerator boxes, an old tarp and some duct tape. Decorated with whatever he could find and artwork from a graffiti painter friend, his home was christened Jekers Cardboard Condo. With visits from fellow shack dwellers building into Cardboard Condo parties things were as settled as the situated allowed, but of course never thankfully to be permanent. Gigs started picking up bringing some finance back into his days whilst a meeting with guitarist singer and song writer, Joe Fallon led to an invitation to records some songs. Further help and support from friends musically and in living and travelling aspects, continued an upswing in Jeker’s fortunes as did continuing shows which helped finance a place to live and recording equipment. Continually working on recording songs and creating the album through 2011 into 2012, Jeker’s Cardboard Condo was finally completed and released, the result an album with true spirit and a instinctive breath filled with easy to access rock passion.
Mark Jeker, assisted by Fallon (guitar/bass/vocal), Mark Clese (guitar/bass/percussion), and Tony Morra(drums/percussion) across the songs making up the release, Jeker’s Cardboard Condo. It gets off to a very decent start with Cardboard Condo. From a fiery start the track settles into a strolling gait with flames of blues guitar and the distinct vocals of Jeker providing an openly honest narrative of the tale we tell above. It is a strong, if in hindsight underwhelming compared to what is to come, introduction which makes for a warm and energetic welcome to the artists and release.
The following Knock is another matter; it’s laid back but beckoning start doing enough to pull in stronger attention before the harmonies and melodic poise of the song rewards by taking senses and passions into the rocking heart of the encounter, its pop hooks and earthy vocals delivering the sealing persuasion for thoughts and appetite. Just hinted at on its predecessor, there is a strong whisper of Graham Parker to this track and the vocal delivery of Jeker which adds another potent dimension to things. Jagged riffs spark another rise in a hunger for the track especially as a Tom Petty essence also makes an appearance as the song rises to an infectious and lingering climax.
Mind’s Eye has a similar glaze to its presence as its predecessor, a Parker/Costelloesque lure irresistible once it wraps around the excellent bass temptation leading into the song at the start. As with all the tracks it is fair to say there is nothing staggeringly new being unveiled but equally there have not been many classic rock albums with such an endearing, uncluttered but imaginative, and convincing suasion to ignite the same level of pleasure either in recent months or so.
Deception is a song which took time to fully win over thoughts and emotions, but after numerous plays it emerged as an addictive little tease which secured strong ardour for itself, though the song always feels a little weak until it is into its stride where it just excels. Its presence is soon equalled and subsequently surpassed by the rock pop contagion of Sometimes, a song which defies you to resist joining in and have feet tapping without reticence, the again Graham Parker smelling Anyway, and the excellent That’s Life with its sizzling blues toned guitars and David Essex like touch, yep honestly.
The brief piano cascade of drama to welcome in Blue Diana, strikes up strong anticipation which is then left disappointed by the following stance of the song. The track is a pleasing and potent part ballad flame of passion and creative skill, a song which has little in flaws but after such a big trigger just does not match the hunger which was sparked, though the melancholic strings and throaty evocation to the tail of the track go some of the way. The same applies to My Reality, its eastern rhythmic invitation outstanding and a seed for lust which the weakest song on the release throws away. In saying that the track is still an easy to ride to make peace with just not one able to satisfy the thirst its entrance bred.
Closing with the impressive Angel in My Pocket and its emotional tonic, Jeker’s Cardboard Condo is a thrilling stomp of a release which does not try to be anything but honest and passionate, something it and its creator achieves with ease. Not your album of the year maybe but certainly able to become one of your favorite aural long term friends.

MEMPHIS TN (IFS) – All Skepticism aside, Kenneth Howard Smith don't watch much TV, he don't listen to CD's that are not sent to me to play on my radio networks, he don't listen to the radio but he DO listen to SDC Radio Networks monitoring his eight radio stations, where he consistently makes changes and upgrades to the music.

SDC Radio Networks for such a small footprint in the internet radio market, has managed to help create one (1) Grammy Award winner in Country newcomer, Kacey Musgraves, a product of MusicSubmit.com and a Television Tony Award for Bernadette Bascom.

Both of these artists have in common, the sharing of the SDC Radio Networks playlists. Also on the list included Chris Montez who scored again with his 1963 hit recording of “Let’s Dance” that exploded into a DSW Shoes commercial and RG Ingersoll’s “All Systems Go” production that ended up on CBS News Television special for Skully Helmets.

SDC Radio Networks’ snail mail delivers to them over 100 new CD’s a week from recording and singer/songwriter artists from all over the world. Another one hundred plus emails received daily includes a minimum of two new mp3s from artists worldwide.

In 1994, KDTN Radio One was launched by SDC on the Broadcast.com system. Little did Kenneth Howard Smith know at that time, he was among the very first internet radio stations. Smith continued his passion for programming unknown artists from around the world. This has been his trademark on the internet radio community for years. He loves the underdog.

But as with any venue that can expose talent, Smith’s little operation has taken on a heavier clientele. Billboard Magazine, MusicSubmit, RadioDirectX, Airplay, Musik and Film, has given the little station that did -- more choices of artists to play with direct reporting power to the trades. SDC has grown from one radio station to over eight (8) stations todate, including two (2) talk radio sites, three (3) television sites and eighteen (18) blog magazines.

SDC Radio Networks’ SDC Digital Systems has its very own Top 50 music show every December for the past five (5) years showcasing its own top pick artists for the year end show. The 2013 Top 50 artist’s champion was Amy Barbera who has won several national and international music awards. Barbera’s shows great promise and could be heading to a major label deal within the next couple of months.

What is the successful secret behind SDC OmniMedia Group? One Kenneth Howard Smith, who attended Antelope Valley College in Lancaster, California while majoring in Public Relations. Later Smith would attend San Fernando Valley College, University of California at Los Angeles, and California School of Law were he learned the art of music and publicity management. While attending his schooling, his day job was a songwriter and record producer for Motown Records, ABC Records, Claridge Records and D-Town Records.

Smith’s productions in music, film and television have include works with Lee Rogers, Merrell Fankhauser, Spirit, Harry Nilsson, Perry Bodkins, Jr., Crosby Still and Nash, and many other artists and group over the years. Smith is primarily known for his “Save The Whales” concert in Washington, D.C., on July 28, 1978, with the funds that launched “The Greenpeace Movement”. The daredevils with the boats that go after the whalers in the open seas.

With his high spirits on music, radio and indie artists, Smith’s hopes were to help get new artist exposure. One of his first groups under the Platinum Sound Productions company Papa’s Results for his MasterTrack Records company that he later leased to Atlantic Records, and with the Christian Rock band “Stryper” in 1978. Duffy Kane

What do you get when you combine an inner calling, a sick passion and an uncommon urgency with The Blues, Rock N’ Roll and Americana?... You get the highly evolved musical madness of guitarist Duffy Kane.  Duffy is a man who just wants to play guitar. His music is as diverse as he is American. His fever for the guitar is evident in his sheer electricity on stage. Like a volcano that is ready to erupt… Duffy is the real deal on stage and off.

Born in Weirton WV, Duffy Kane was surrounded by the sounds of Jazz, Classical, Blues and Country. A classically trained violist; he altered his knowledge of the violin and easily transferred it to the guitar. A self taught guitar player with a classically trained ear is the foundation for Duffy’s provocative guitar style. His mother was a guitar player. When Duffy was a kid there was a beat up guitar that sat in the corner of his living room. Duffy remembers grieving as a child because his yearning to pick up that guitar was so strong but his father forbade him. That created even more of a yearning to grab that guitar and let it rip! Finally, when he was 16… he saved enough money to buy his own Les Paul and never looked back.

A cross between Stevie Ray Vaughan’s musicianship and Ted Nugent’s stage presence… his style evolved into a need. He started playing festivals and performed with Blues greats: Johnny Winter, Big Jack Johnson, Tino Gonzales, Debbie Davies, Sonny Rhodes, the Nighthawks, and Smokey Wilson. He recorded his first studio album Let Your Insides Do the Talking at 16th Avenue Sound in Nashville with Grammy nominated producer Brian Hardin (Jerry Lee Lewis and Charlie Daniels).

Duffy Kane’s new record is set for release May 2014 and has been inspired by Duffy’s need to tell his story. The debut album touches on geo politics but is not preachy. Duffy says, “I write to wake people up to the true nature of the geo political dogs that are screwing up our planet. I feel the need to present the truth and music is a safe way to do that... well maybe not safe… but a good way to convey emotion.”
The debut single entitled “I’ve Been Lied To” deals with the lies and disappointments that Duffy has experienced in the music business.

It stretches tonal boundaries and introduces more colorful, harmonic passages.. The second single, “Why My Road” is a slow cooked tribute to Texas Blues. Kane’s musicianship is based deep within the roots of The Blues while showcasing his original signature sound.

Duffy’s new work aims at powerful and wins. The songs will make you laugh and cry and will hopefully enlighten. Duffy says, “The songs on this album are really about being an individual in the light of truth and not in darkness. They are my own personal struggles to choose the light. I want to do what is good and I hope I can help others through my music and my message.”

Duffy is currently on tour throughout the North and South East. Seeing Duffy live is an experience that will uplift your soul. He’s been called a Roadhouse Mozart and that name follows him because of the truth behind it. A rogue renaissance musician who is ahead of his time… Duffy is a man on the run. Please check his website: www.duffykane.com for tour dates.

February 15, 2014- New York, NY- Blues/ Rock guitarist, Duffy Kane will release his LP entitled “Dead Man Walking” this May, 2014. Duffy will hit the road this spring to play the House of Blues in Orlando as well as other dates in Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland, and Virginia. His passion to combine The Blues, Rock N’ Roll and Americana is evident on his new LP. His music is as diverse as he is American. His fever for the guitar is evident in his sheer electricity on stage.

Richard Kennedy, Music Director for Roy Clark:
"Duffy Kane made me sit up and actually listen - his music is not something that you can just have playing in the background. He draws you into a world created by a sound that comes from experience. The roots of his music are obviously deep yet he takes the listener to new ground - familiar and at the same time uncontaminated by cliche."
Michael B. Sutton, Composer, former Staff Writer/Producer at Classic Motown
"Duffy is the real deal.  Love the music!  Great voice and guitar chops as well...whole lotta soul!!"
Keith Hannaleck, Muzik Reviews.com
"Duffy Kane looks like one tough hombre in his publicity shot and that may be true but if you listen to his music you know straight away that one picture does not define a man. It is the music of Kane that makes him. The sounds of Blues, Americana and Rock will come pouring out your speakers like a raging river, just hang on and hope you can stay afloat! Diversity rules the roost with the music of Mr. Kane and that is what got him his place on our site. He does it all very well."
Bryan Wodaski, Queen City Performing Arts Develoopment, Inc
"Kane represents a man who has found his way, with a very accomplished style that is not formulaic or derivative.  There is no need for him to copy anyone.  He is an American original."
John Fizer, Graffiti Mag, Music Monthly, Pulp Radio
"For my two cents I'll go on record as saying he is without a doubt of international caliber and probably the best Texas blues player since Stevie Ray Vaughn."
Craig Keyes, EMR Productions, Salt Lake City UT
"The best unsigned blues artist I've seen to date.  You definately don't want to follow him on stage.  Hard act to follow."
